New Automotive Technology To Help Improve America’s Road Safety

Posted by Delphi in Cars and Trucks

More than 100 Americans die every day in automobile accidents. In fact, over the last century, more have perished due to car crashes in the United States than in all the wars the country has fought. Although this is a horrible statistic, the 2006 Traffic Safety Annual Assessment from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported the largest U.S. decline in terms of both number and percentage since 1992. This vigorous reduction is a goal that automotive engineers are striving to continue year after year.

Innovative automotive engineering can make cars safer, but at the same time, drivers must also strive for improvements. Many motorists at one time or another can recall either almost being killed on the road, stories of road-rage or helplessly observing an accident happen right in front of their very eyes. According to a 1999 Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) special, Escape! Because Accidents Happen - Car Crash, the roads are, indeed, a major threat. What’s more, an automotive magazine recently published statistics which reveal that more than 95% of these accidents involve some degree of (poor) driver behavior.

Indeed, some Americans may not rank amongst the best of the world’s drivers, but it’s not entirely due to operator error, either. Poor roadway maintenance, roadway design and equipment failure have also been referenced as top factors affecting crashes. Frequently, driving behavior interacts with at least one of these other factors to produce a grave situation.

Aside from rectifying the paradox that the majority of drivers consider themselves more skillful than their counterparts, better engineering and innovative automotive technology could help improve roadway safety. Today, it is well understood that properly deployed cushions of air (i.e., airbags) can assist in saving lives. In much the same way, in the previous generation, the advantages of good restraining devices were discovered. Car navigation systems particularly aid the directionally challenged - and, what about using those fancy “carputers” for technology to help make our roads safer? Automotive engineers are answering this need by developing “active safety systems.” These systems can help reduce the number of crashes and minimize the effects of crashes that do occur.

Automotive safety is taking on a new role as active safety components are beginning to gain ground as technology and development improve. Some suppliers are developing specialized active and passive safety systems. These include forward collision and lane departure warning, electronic stability control, pre-crash mitigation, side alert systems, active night vision and road sign and pedestrian recognition - all of which do about what they sound like they should.

Imagine how different driving could be if motorists were warned before they were about to sideswipe a fellow road warrior, alerted before missing a stop sign or even just able to see what’s ahead at night. Such technologies could prove paramount to safety as humankind steps into an era of even more cars, faster speeds and the repercussions of recent population explosions.

A European study reported that 80% of drivers involved in accidents believed the other party could have done something to prevent the mishap. But what if everybody just stopped blaming each other and became better drivers? What if existing technology was utilized and built upon to reduce the number of traffic fatalities? In the end, determining fault matters more if something can be done about it, such as discovering ways to prevent other collisions.

It can be scary out there on bustling roadways. All one has to do is hop on a busy interstate or horn-chorused city street to realize roads “ain’t no horse trails.” In the chaos that is modern driving, these new “active” safety systems are promising.

Identifying Minor Repairs In A Volvo Transmission

Posted by Charmen in Cars and Trucks

Many vehicle owners make the mistake of automatically assuming they need remanufactured Volvo transmissions. Simply by educating yourself about the basics of this drive part and following a few simple steps to identify basic problems, you can essentially save thousands of dollars. You eliminate extra mechanics bills and have less down time.

Tranny Basics

Any brand of tranny involves three main components. The outside metal casing that contains all the intricate inner workings is the bell housing. The second is the gearing that drives the machine. This involves a large set of gears called ‘primaries’ and a second set of gears referred to as the ‘planetaries.’ They allow the vehicle to change directions and dictate the amount of force behind the drive. If anything goes wrong with either of these systems, a rebuilt part is often the only solution.

The third component is the area where most minor problems occur. The fluid system keeps all of the drive’s insides lubricated so it can function smoothly. Without it, metal grinds metal and things stop working quickly. Besides a fluid check system, this involves a series of hoses and a filter that prevents debris and water from entering the system.

Identifying Simple Breakdowns

As previously stated, most simple drive problems involve the fluid system. The first step is to check the level of fluid remaining in the system. If it is low or empty, you will need to determine where it is going. Some of the common areas for leaks include the filler tube connection, speed sensor, connections between the tranny and motor, and the drain underneath. If no leaks are detected, examine the radiator coolant. If the fluid is there, you will notice the coolant level is higher than normal or you will visibly see a contaminant in it. Finally, don’t forget to check and replace the filter. If the problem clears up, you know you found the problem.

When Are Remanufactured Volvo Transmissions Necessary?

If you have noticed a metallic grinding sound, loud banging, a refusal to shift into gear, stay in gear, and/or feel lunging, it may be time to consider remanufactured Volvo transmissions. This happens commonly if you fail to find a leak in time or if you couldn’t find anything wrong with the fluid system. The insides of these parts require specialized knowledge and tools so it is best to make your next step a trip to see an expert. He or she will determine the problem and recommend a solution. Purchasing a rebuilt replacement is a considerable repair, but remanned trannies are often guaranteed.

Taking the time to eliminate basic problems eliminates the hassle of spending additional money needlessly on vehicle repairs. The insides are an intricate and complicated mass of systems, but the outside isn’t as bad as you may think. If it is time to consider remanufactured Volvo transmissions, purchase one from an experienced dealer with a solid reputation to ensure you get one that is of good quality. In most cases, a rebuilt tranny is just as good if not better than the original version. This makes the money more easily spent.

How The Humble VW Made Me Love The Open Road

Posted by Dominicdonaldson in Cars and Trucks

I would like to share a very personal experience with you. It is a tearful tale about a hot hatch that had its beginnings in a world of genuine chamois and finished its life as a burned out wreck. Lonely and dejected, this poor car ended its mechanical life without a trace of dignity and a far cry from the plush beginnings of immaculately paved driveways and privet hedges.

In 2004 I had the utter displeasure of breaking down on the M25. My Space Wagon decided that the engine was to work no longer and promptly dropped it on the tarmac of the hard shoulder. I was then forced to hire a car until I could locate replacement. I ended up leasing a Volkswagen Golf GTi and after my lumbering automatic people carrier, it sent me into throes of automobile excitement. This was an entirely unplanned situation. I was not meant to fall in love with a car, I was not meant to become a petrol head, I had no intention of burning rubber and doing donuts; but something had happened deep inside and I can only assume that I’d been kind of ‘Clarksoned’.

I immediately went through the local auto trader ads to locate my new beauty, but I just couldn’t afford to buy what my heart desired, and had to downshift as it were to an older model. I decided that a Mark II from the late eighties was within my budget, and promptly ended my leasing contract to purchase the car of my dreams. The minute my eyes met my Mark II model, it was love. The test drive was a thrust fuelled drag race along the A127 and the hefty weight of the hot hatch steering made me feel like I was in my very own road movie, finding freedom and sticking two fingers up to the establishment. I was ready to pack a suitcase and leave nothing but a cloud of dust in my wake.

When I got the papers, I understood why there was such a rapport between me and my beloved VW. We had met many years earlier, in my home town and travelled some miles together whilst a friend of mine was the rightful owner of this trusty automobile. He had it bought for him, brand new as a gift for passing his test. It was a gleaming trophy of success, wrapped with a ribbon on a driveway flanked by perfectly pruned privets. We drove to the coast, through the countryside, along main roads and along dusty tracks to far flung lakes. We went camping with it, picnicked from it and even had a fire side party using it as a stereo on wheels. The love I felt towards this car was comparable to the way Sam Witwicky felt about Bumble Bee in the Transformer movie.

Love alone however was not enough to keep my ageing automobile with me; the rust spread, things fell off and eventually it got swiped by some little oik and went out in a ball of flames just off the A12. The oik remained unharmed, just for the record. Once again, I was sans auto, and set about finding a car. Going to yet another leasing company, I once more headed for the Vee Dubs. My recent experience of love and loss, which I likened to a personal movie, could only be honoured in one way. I leased myself a VW beetle. With a great series of films based on the ever personable Herbie, and a smash hit childrens animation with Bumble Bee; It was only right to choose a classic for my next adventure.

Simple Guide To Buying A New Sports Car

Posted by Everdrives123 in Cars and Trucks

Buying a new sports car does not have to be difficult. If you have done your homework ahead of time, you will better know what to expect and how to handle each part of the buying process. Probably the first thing you should do is determine how much you will be able to afford. Many people make the mistake of buying a vehicle that is out of their price range and put off the payment details to another time. Keep in mind that although a car may have a monthly payment that you can afford, making these small payments is going to increase the total amount you end up paying for the car. Make sure before closing the deal that you have seen the final amount that you will pay in the end.

After you have figured out how much you will be able to afford, it is time to decide which type of sports car to get. There are many decisions when it comes to this. For example, will you be getting a car that is new or used? Will you buy a coupe or an SUV? There are many things you will need to take into consideration such as: the size of your family, what you plan on doing with your new vehicle, and how often you plan to drive and where. If you open yourself up to many different types of vehicles, you will be able to find something that is less expensive and will be in a better situation to haggle as well.

Making a deal with the car salesman can be difficult, especially if this is the first car you have ever bought. One thing that dealerships like to do is lump everything together. This includes the price of the car, trade in, and financing. Make sure that you keep this separate when deciding and haggle on each of these individually if need be. Remember that the sales price of the vehicle is your focus, not the monthly payments. Before entering the dealership, study up on negotiations, service contracts, trade-ins, financing, and insurance.

After you have completed these steps, you should be able to purchase the right car for you. Look through your local papers or the internet for a list of all the cars for sale in your area. Doing this, you should be able to determine the average selling price for the type of vehicle you are looking for, as well as the dealerships that are selling them at the lowest prices. Even if you do not end up buying from these cheaper dealerships, you may be able to use their advertisements in order to haggle down the price.

Buying a new sports car is one of the more important decisions you will make in your life. Buying a vehicle that you can not afford could end up hurting your credit or costing you much more than the vehicle is actually worth. If you study up beforehand though, you should be able to drive out of the lot in the car of your dreams.

Custom Fitted Car Covers-For The Best Exterior Protection

Posted by Teahupoo in Cars and Trucks

Car covers that are custom fitted now that’s a thing that you may have never considered. But that is definitely one thing that you should consider. Why? We will get to that later. But first let’s see what we mean by car covers that are custom fitted.

A custom fitted car cover is the one that fits your car as per its measurements, one that has pockets for your side mirrors and stays on the body of your car and is not blown off by wind or rain. Now isn’t that something worth a few bucks? But don’t just think that the benefits of a custom fitted cover ends there. Such a cover can give your car lot of protections.

Custom fitted covers generally have four layers. These layers are bound to protect your car from moisture, road salt, acid rain, hail and sleet.

A car parked outside without a cover can be very easily scarred by flying debris, dust and dirt. A custom fitted cover can guarantee better protection for your car’s body against the dust on the roads. Don’t let your car age in looks even before it is due.

How many times have you had to shoo off the pigeon from depositing special debris on the body of your car? How many times have you had to shoo off the squirrel from concentrating on your car’s door? Or the crickets that enjoy the underneath of your car? Well, a custom fitted car cover is heavy duty, so whatever the elements of nature may want to do to your car, they will have to be happy with the car cover. There is no way that they can penetrate the cover.

UV rays do not just harm your screen. Harmful sun rays harm your car’s body, its wax cover and its shine. Let the car cover take the toll of the sun’s assault while your car takes its much deserved break underneath it. Protect your car from the sun, use a custom fitted cover.

Protect your car from getting banged by someone opening the doors of the car parked next to yours! Protect it from the impact a skateboarder running off balance might have on your car. Use a custom fitted cover and you will rest assured.

Every time that you leave your car unattended your car draws unwanted attention form people. Some may just be hovering around and eyeing your car while other might be in the lurk of some cash that you may have left in your car, some other valuable like a cell phone may or your invaluable music system. A car cover can protect your car from such unwanted attention and give you the much needed peace of mind.

Custom fitted car covers are made for specific models like BMW, Honda and Ford, etc. So it is never like you have to use the cover made with the specifications of a different make. While shopping fro custom fitted car covers, look for ones with more layers for better durability and with side pockets for complete protection.

Car Cleaning-How To Clean Your Exterior And Interior The Right Way

Posted by Teahupoo in Cars and Trucks

Well it may sound metaphorical but yes your car will also need a shiny exterior and an interior that races at high speed, just like you! Well till now all you may have heard about maintaining your car is that:

Maintain a steady speed of 60mph and your car will run smooth for a longer period.

Use the correct gas needed for your car.

You have no idea how things pile up in the trunk. So keep the trunk empty for fuel efficiency.

All of that is true when it comes to running your car. But it is not just the engine that constitutes your car; the shiny body that you liked once, the color that you had specifically chosen or the leather seats that you were proud of when you booked the car, all of that needs proper maintenance and care.

Let’s look one by one how you can keep the exterior of your car shiny:

First rinse the dirt and dust off your car. Now use a sponge and soap it up well. Enjoy the foam as it lathers the body of the car! Wash it off or hose off the soap from the body next and clean the car. Now remember to dry it off with a soft, clean cloth. If you leave wet spots and water droplets on the body of the car then those will gather dust and you will get a spot when it dries up.

Once a month you must use the chemicals available to remove bugs and dirt from the body of the car. These generally polish the surface of the car at the same time and are readily available in auto parts stores.

Next is polishing. Use a good wax and pamper your car once in two months. Agreed you may want to just drive in a car wash and get all of these done, but believe me there is nothing better than personal care.

Tires kiss the road; keep them strong, well-maintained and sturdy and they will ensure that your car is stable. Cleaning your tires is a must. Use cleaning products to stop building up of dust.

Use care products specially made for other parts of your car; vinyl, wood work if any or plastic and rubber.

Once, you have the exterior dazzling your neighbor’s don’t forget to pamper the interiors of your car to impress those whom you drive around!

Use seat covers. This cannot be stressed enough. It is easy to take these off and clean. Vacuum your car seats, then clean the seat covers, dry them and put them back on the seats.

Clean the windows with proper cleaners, the dashboard and other attachments carefully using soft cleansers.

Vacuum the carpet and use rubber mats to keep dust off from getting under the carpet.

Simple, easy to use tips to maintain the look of your car all by yourself and also gives you a good break for your Sundays. Remember to park your car in your garage if you are not using it often, this will protect the car and keep that extra dust off the body!
