Collecting Fantasy Daggers And Knives

Posted by Cole3388 in Collecting

In the world of collectibles, fantasy items such as daggers and knives always are a popular hit with many different people. Go to a knife show and you will see plenty of people surrounding the fantasy knives and daggers collection. What is it about these designs that strike us as fascinating? It is the design or the function?

Either way, collecting these wonderful pieces is sure to make you the envy of your friends, especially if you have gotten the hottest item around, one that no one else can find. These pieces stimulate our imagination, and take us on flights of fancy to other worlds that we can only dream about.

There are many ways to seek out these collectibles online. Many fantasy stores carry them as well as knife and sword shops. They also can be found in a physical location such as a knife show or a store that sells edged weaponry.

There are many different fantasy knife and dagger makers that also will sell retail through the internet. I am sure that you have heard about some of the most fabulous weaponry that comes from realms that we only read about, but some weapons genius has forged into reality.

A tip to remember when collecting fantasy knives and daggers, be aware that you should always take care of your daggers and knives. Perform routine maintenance on them, so that they will always look their best. Remember to have closed cases for these knives and daggers to prevent the elements from getting to them. Be aware that the price that you will pay for one of these daggers or knives will vary dependent upon what it is and where you buy it from.

There are many makers that will charge you a pretty penny for buying their wares, especially some of the more big names in collection.

That said, you can also find these types of fantasy knives and daggers in catalogs. That’s right, I said mail order. Sometimes that is the cheapest way to purchase one. Also remember that these knives and daggers can be used as weapons, so always have them put away from little fingers.

This eliminates the temptation to use the ornamental knife or dagger as a real weapon, plus eliminates someone little from getting hurt while trying to play with it. As these are collectibles, always have them insured if you can afford it.

Why insurance for fantasy dagger and knife collectibles? The answer is very simple. If you lose your house in a catastrophic event, unless it is insured, those collectibles will not be paid for in a home owners or apartment renters insurance. You need to insure for the cost of replacement when taking out insurance on these valuables.

This is just something to consider when purchasing any collectible item. There are many different outlets that sell these items to the general public that one should not be hard to find. Just remember that if you can dream it up, someone can bring it into reality. Happy collecting.

The Politics Of Cigars: Don’t Box Me In!

Posted by Chiron99 in Hobbies

Cigars have long been a part of the iconography of American politics. On the negative side, early-twentieth-century newspaper cartoons symbolized the greed of villainous “party bosses” and robber barons by showing fat men lighting their stogies with one-hundred dollar bills. On a more positive note, cigar boxes were also used to advertise for various campaigns - in the years before there were television airways for candidates to blanket with their personally approved “messages.”

It all starts - at least for those of us whose interest is in United States politics - with Henry Clay’s 1850 visit to Cuba. A five-time presidential candidate, former leader of the Whig Party, and broker of several important legislative compromises - his “Missouri Compromise” helped shape pre-Civil War America, by ensuring that slavery would not expand farther north than Arkansas. Clay was a seventy-three-year-old eminence grise, still serving as a Kentucky senator, when he visited Cuba, where a local cigar factory decided to “honor” him by using his name and likeness on its labels. Other companies followed suit, using Clay and other congressmen (John Calhoun and Daniel Webster) to sell rival brands (something that was easier to do in the days before copyright law). Clay’s reaction to this bit of inspired salesmanship is not known, and he died within two years of the trip - nine years too early to witness the Civil War that he spent his congressional career trying to prevent (sometimes at the expense of the abolitionist cause, which he sometimes espoused). Those who love their cigars with a little alcohol have another reason to remember Henry Clay, however - he introduced the Mint Julep to Washington, D.C.

Ulysses S. Grant - yes, that’s U.S. Grant - helped win the Civil War for the Union side, then got himself elected President for two terms (1869-1877). During his administration, he helped spearhead the country’s Reconstruction - a ten-year time in which African Americans made social and political gains that would be eclipsed by a new wave of racism in the post-1880 period - and he also gave us Yellowstone National Park. According to those who’ve read his two-volume memoir, which was a national bestseller in the immediate aftermath of his defeat in the 1876 presidential campaign, he was also a terrific writer. He wrote the memoirs for money after he discovered that his family was near-destitute (presidents in those days didn’t get a pension) and that he was dying of throat cancer, threatening to leave his family without support; the memoirs helped keep his family afloat, and also won him acclaim from such writers as Gertrude Stein, Matthew Arnold and Mark Twain, their publisher.

With all that activity, it’s amazing that he had time to be a connoisseur of whiskey and cigars, but he did. His presidential campaign song even acknowledged as much (”Less talk and no more war/ For President, Ulysses Grant a-smoking his cigar”). Unsurprisingly, his face turned up on a number of cigar boxes, which served both to raise awareness of his campaign and use his famous face to increase interest in the cigars within. (Among northerners, he was a popular hero, similar to Dwight Eisenhower in the aftermath of World War II, or George S. Patton after that movie.)

In 1872, Grant ran again - this time against Horace Greeley, the great newspaper editor who once hired a little-known academic named Karl Marx as his foreign correspondent - but one of the third parties in that election was the Equal Rights Party, which nominated Victoria Woodhull, a feminist, and Frederick Douglass, the great black anti-slavery writer, for president. (It’s hard to imagine a ticket with more ethical credibility than that!) The National Cigar Museum, an online memorabilia collection, actually offers images of the commemorative Equal Rights cigar box that was distributed for sale by supporters of the company. After all, “equal rights for women” included the ability to smoke in public, which is what this box depicts women doing.

CigarFox provides you the opportunity to build your own sampler of the finest cigars that include cigar brands like Montecristo, Romeo & Julieta, H Upmann, Macanudo, Cohiba, Partagas, Gurkha and many more. Choose from more than 1200 different cigars! Other cigar products include cigar humidors, cigar boxes, and cigar accessories like Zippo Lighters.

Tips In Greeting Card Making

Posted by Ergo_items in Arts and Crafts

It would really be fascinating if you receive a card and one that is personalized at that. Personally, it makes me feel special because that person took all the effort of making one card that represents at the moment of the creation his feelings, his thoughts and his motives. I would love to receive personalized cards as much as I love giving them. Now, if you want to make your own greeting card, you have to know that it is just easy to do even grade-schoolers can do basically just the card they want.

Just to show some fascination over greeting card making, it is obstinate to think that personal cards should look amateurish and lacking in style. It does not have to look that way if you know what you want in the first place. But first you have to start with what sort of materials you need. You can buy card paper or the ones that are blank cards. You could also buy some card board and cut some to any card dimension you want. However, with this you will need a steady hand for you to be able to cut the card straight.

After the paper, you will need now the decoration materials like glue or paste for attaching some decorations, pen markers which have variety of colors and if you are good at water paint or pastel then this may do also and some black pens. With these materials, you can now start decorating your blank card paper. You can start by planning what design you want to put into the card. You can’t just doodle without knowing how exactly you want to make it. It also depends on what occasion you are making the card for because if you are making a birthday card, it would have designs different from sorry cards right?

You can also make use of whim stickers that will serve as your primary design. There are wide varieties of whim stickers you can choose from and it could also depend on what kind of greeting card you are making. If you think you are not artistic enough, you do not have to be concerned about it because all you need is style. No fancy painting, you just need to follow what you feel and what you think would be the best design for your greeting card.

It does not matter whether you have what it takes to make a breathtaking card. What matters is how you input your feelings, thoughts and ideas into the card. You don’t need to be concerned too much about how artistic your card should be because that is not your goal for making a personalized card. You are making it because you want to make the person you are giving it to feel special and there is no other easy way to do it than just give it your best. Incorporate yourself into the card. This is what makes the card personalized because of the kind of touch you give into it.

What Makes Resin Model Cars So Special?

Posted by Kadence64 in Hobbies

The model car is ever in demand today as most people can’t afford to do much of anything else. Gas is too high to go anywhere, so more and more families are staying home and taking part in the hobbies they had neglected with time. The more rare the model kit, the more it cost the individual. Another price that is rising is what is called resin model cars, but they don’t cost nearly as much as the rarer car models. This is what is causing more model car companies to switch to resin. So, for those of you who are wondering what resin cars are just keep reading.

A Basic Definition

Resin cars are those model cars that are made out of this material. It’s called resin of course, but what it is, is actually a plastic that is really a cast and not what used to be known as injection-molded. Due to the lessening of the injection-molded types of model cars, the machines that were once used to make them are no longer needed. The resin kits don’t cost as much as the kits whose materials are made out of polystyrene. But they are pretty expensive.

So, how do marketers determine what to charge for these new resin brands? One thing that determines the price of these model cars are the volume at which they are producing the cars, as well as how well these models turn out. The quality at which they are developing them is the big determining factor as to how much they go for when you buy them off the shelf at the store of your choice.

Not only is there a difference in prices for these model cars, but the different types of materials affects you the buyers as well. Those model cars made out of resin are different from those older types in the fact that there is more to do when you put them together. The resin material is more brittle, and when you sand this material, you should really wear a mask as the fumes are more toxic. When you put the model together, you might need different materials. This is due to the fact that the chemicals in the two seem to be different, and may require different glue as well as different paint. But the resin seems to be sturdier.

The Benefits for Producer and Consumer

Companies have seen that their buyers are a bit more pleased with the resin cars. This is to say that, for once, a company listened to its buyers and created something that could help them both out. The cars hold up a lot longer. Plus, people who have made model building an addicting habit haven’t been spending so much out of their pocket. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. Of course, people using the resin cars have more work ahead of them, and should take more precautions with the chemical components they use to piece the kits together; they do enjoy a better overall experience. A good compromise for both parties involved, if I do say so myself, being a fan of putting these kits together.

The Skill Levels Of Model Car Kits

Posted by Kadence64 in Hobbies

Just as everything we do in life has different levels of mastery, so it is the same for model car kits. There are a total of five skill levels. Although, two of them can somewhat fit into one snug skilled level. These levels are determined by the detail that is applied to the models that you are trying to create. Read on to find which skilled level you are at!

Defining the First Level

The first level is for beginners. Most beginners have to stay at this level for about a month or two, depending on how many models you create. With these models, they are already painted for you. So, there’s no need to get yourself dirty. The basic idea of these models is learning how things go together. Most of these, you just sort of snap the pieces into place. If you were anything like how I was when I began, you just thought one piece could fit anywhere. You knew the car had a front and a back, and four wheels. They use the method of peeling the decals and placing them on, rather than the ones where you have to use water. According to most websites, these kits are for young ones, or for those who haven’t done models in a while.

Level Two Models

The second level is different in a few ways. This level is recommended for those over the age of ten. Most of them come as plain white pieces; so, on this level; you do begin to start painting. Here, they tell you how many parts are in the box, and this adds more detail. This is also the level where glue will be needed. There are also what are called waterslide decals, which are more life-like.

Level Three

Level three is about as hard as levels four and five. There are more versions of the model than just the ones that the company illustrates, so don’t be alarmed if there are more parts in the box than what the instructions tell you about. Another thing they add to these kits is color schemes. You mix colors and so forth beginning in this level. Don’t attempt this skill if you are not familiar with the basics, because let’s face it, you’re only wasting your money.

The Top Levels

Levels four and five are put together. This is the level that you begin tinkering with the engine and putting details on the inside as well. The higher the level you go, the more work you’ll be putting into it. All of the levels have some sort of age limit. Yet, this is just what they think is appropriate to begin using the kit. It takes into account the fumes from the glue, paint etc., the skill involved in each level, and so on. What it all boils down to though is how comfortable you feel with what you are doing. Some people get it really easily, so they fly by skill levels one and two; while some remain on level one just to be sure they have the basics down pat before they move into greater detail. Just find what level you feel you are ready to handle. Don’t think too big.

Digital Scrapbooking For Newbies: How You Can Get Started Today

Posted by Bestselfhelp in Arts and Crafts

You’re probably familiar with traditional scrapbooking done with paper and printed photos. But there are a growing number of people who are using their computers to create unique scrapbooking pages. If you’re looking for a way to artfully preserve your photos in a digital format, digital scrapbooking may be right for you.

In contrast to traditional scrapbooking, digital scrapbooking doesn’t require very many supplies. All you need to get started is digital imaging software that supports layers (such as Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro) as well as digital copies of your photos and digital scrapbooking templates.

If you’d like to print out your own digitally created scrapbook pages, you will also need access to a high quality photo printer and photo paper.

While a traditional scrapbooker will collect piles of paper and dozens of types of embellishments, you can easily download free embellishments to your computer from different digital scrapbooking supply websites. Because there aren’t any supply costs, digital scrapbooking can be a much cheaper alternative to traditional scrapbooking.

Look for templates that will help you easily format your photos and coordinate your embellishments. These templates normally include background layers, fonts and embellishment choices. There are also paid templates and embellishment sites that offer better quality enhancements. You can build a large library of embellishments for a very low price.

Select the photos you want to use in your layout and then edit them if you need to. You can use your digital imaging software to crop your photos, reduce red eye and adjust the color levels. Place the photos inside of the pre-made templates and then add your journaling and other decorations.

There are no limits to the creativity that you can use with digital scrapbooking. The pages are easy to edit, so you can tweak and adjust your pages based on what looks best. If you get the hang of creating your own embellishments you can even offer them as downloads for other people to use.

As far as storage goes, you have a few different options. You can keep all of your digital scrapbooking pages on your computer. You can share them online in their digital format and even burn them to a CD to share with your friends and family. If you’d prefer to have hard copies of your pages, you can print them off on your computer or send them out to be printed. Several online photo processing sites specialize in helping digital scrapbookers achieve the looks they want in printed form.

Many scrapbookers use a standard size of 12 X 12 inches, which is obviously larger than the standard printer. You can have your pages specially printed at that size, or simply create layouts on an 8 1/2 X 11 inch template.

In addition to creating complete pages in a digital format, you can also combine your digitally created pages with traditional scrapbooking elements. This form of scrapbooking, called hybrid scrapbooking, allows you to use the pages you create on your computer and then add dimension with velum, flowers and other three dimensional elements.

No matter how you choose to use digital scrapbooking you can make use of this fun technique. It’s easy to get started and relatively cheap. Whether you want to make entirely digital pages or use a hybrid scrapbooking technique, this is something that you owe it to yourself to try.
