London Tours; History A Vital Inclusion

Posted by Prettyone in Travel Destinations

London tours are popular with many tourists as this is a capital city rich with history and a heritage that is intrinsically linked to the development of this illustrious nation. When visiting London, those on tours almost always find it difficult to decide on which of the many attractions to visit. Hopefully, the following information on some of the most important historical sites in the capital will help ease the decision, leading to more enjoyable and rewarding tours.

The history of London is fascinating; a settlement since the time of the Roman occupation it rapidly developed as an important trade post and centre of culture and political power. Since this period the city continued to grow, becoming the country’s capital and the site of some of the most important events throughout English history. For those on tours, there are a number of interesting sights, many of which are considered to be UNESCO World Heritage Sites; here are just four of them.

The first of these historical sites that should be included in tours of London is the Palace of Westminster. While today the palace is the home of the legislative and administrative bodies; throughout history it was the home of kings and political rule. Some parts of the medieval palace remain although the exterior is a Victorian neo-gothic design. As one of the most recognisable sights anywhere in the world, tours should include this not only because of its fascinating history, but also for the photo opportunities.

Of equal importance is the Tower of London, a world heritage site that should be included in the itineraries of most tours. The history of this royal residence contains some of the most gruesome tales from the English past. At the centre of the site lies the medieval White Tower; an important building that at the time represented the domination of the Normans over the surrounding population. The other buildings were added later and the grounds have seen important events from history such as the beheading of Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth I’s imprisonment and many other instances of torture and execution. Today the tower houses the crown jewels of the realm. A must see for those with a love of opulence and sparkling adornment.

The Royal Naval College at Greenwich is the third of the heritage sites worth seeing on tours of London. Designed by heralded architect Sir Christopher Wren, the designer of St Paul’s Cathedral it is a fine example of his work. Until a decade ago the site still operated as a college, training members of the navy. A fabulous building that dominates the Thames waterfront it imposing size and design is especially beautiful from the river; the eye being attracted by the two towers to the sublime palace and hillside in the background.

Finally, of the world heritage sites in London the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew are well worth including in most tours. The gardens contain some fantastic examples of glasswork buildings that are considered by many to be reason enough to visit Kew. Inside these domineering glass houses are some of the most varied and diverse plant species kept anywhere in the world; the site remains today as one of the world’s leading research facilities in the field of botanical study. The gardens themselves also offer tourists a welcome distraction from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Hopefully these sites will be part of many people’s tours of London. With so much to see and so little time compiling an itinerary can be difficult. With the inclusion of these sites a trip to London should be interesting, educational and enjoyable.

Travel expert Thomas Pretty looks into some of the inclusions that should be present on London tours for their historical and cultural importance.

Taking Off Into The Sunshine

Posted by AnnaStenning in Travel Destinations

Nothing would make me happier than to go back to a nice beach holiday abroad, for the duration of the winter months. However, it is not as simple as that if you are in your mid twenties and buried up to the chin with debts! One good thing about taking off into the sunset as a single person with no financial attachments (other than the said debts) is that you would not have to worry about leaving behind any responsibilities, such as a young family or a mortgage.

One experience I can recall from a personal friend of mine is when he had decided to just spontaneously make a trek up to one of the luscious Caribbean Island, of Barbados, forking out just enough to spend a month living in one of the Barbados luxury hotels. As much as this may seem like something illogical, unplanned and perhaps foolish, however, as mentioned before what could possibly stop someone from just picking up and departing if they have no important attachments?

Barbados is a country which is rich in interesting historical information, relaxed calm culture and plenty of friendly locals to keep you entertained for your visit. Travelling across to this country will mean forgetting about your worries and putting behind any stresses that may bombard your mind when at home. Barbados luxury hotels are also available to people on a small budget, as they include room service, swimming pool, cleaner and precooked meals at designated times.

If the idea of drinking endless amounts of cocktails, eating a wide range of exotic seafood catches your eye then some of the Barbados luxury hotels will have complimentary drinks inclusive of your price in staying at the hotel. Furthermore, the luxury part comes out from where the location of the hotel is situated, with stunning white grainy sands, deep blue seawaters and the salty sea air breezing into your nostrils.

If your Friday night consists of street partying and food, then the Friday nights in Barbados will not fall short in impressing your taste buds, with their fish frying, music and street parties. This is the best time for tourists to sample the exotic cuisines, join on the musical fun and meet the locals with their giant fishes. As it is a coastal area, the main staple food is fish, so try not to be too surprised in seeing men and women fishing for tuna, shark, barracuda and fly fish. Perhaps a quick dash at the fish markets will help appease the eye of possible gourmet choices.

As Barbados is not a very big island, it will not take a very long time to visit some of the main attractions of this area, as such as the St Laurence Gap, near the Parish of Christ; Dover Beach (a very large stretch of white sanded beach); Harrisons Cave; the famous Sugar Mill and Plantation House (dating back to when sugar canes were cultivated for money in Barbados); quirky pirate attractions of Sam Lords Castle and of course the abundance of restaurants.

As well as all of the cultural and historical aspects of the country there are also nightclubs, bars and live music venues for the young and enthusiastic party-goers. These are best enjoyed any day of the week, with an itinerary of the best days for specifically themed nights. The list is endless, although when visiting Barbados one will need to plan ahead on the places they would like to visit and get a feel for some of their traditional customs.

Anna Stenning loves to visit and stay in some of the best Barbados luxury hotels, taking a break when she can from the stresses of the modern world.

The Other Side Of Amsterdam

Posted by Amayco in Travel Destinations

Amsterdam has a great bar culture that is like nowhere else in Europe. As well as nightclubs, restaurants with live bands playing, and the usual coffee shops on offer, Amsterdam is home to the unique cannabis coffee shops where it is not only legal to smoke marijuana, you can actually buy it to take away from the store to take away! As you might imagine, this kind of place is popular with tourists, curious to see or experience it for themselves!

Marijuana is a legalised substance in Holland, as long as you are only carrying enough for personal use, without an intent to sell or supply others. Strangely, smoking tobacco in public bars has recently been banned, so mixed joints of tobacco and cannabis are not allowed! If you want to partake in this side of Holland’s culture, you’ll have to smoke pure cannabis. A word of warning however: the laws are changing all the time, and added complication involving laws that cover the entire European Union make the circumstances relating to cannabis use in Amsterdam particularly volatile, so be sure to check the laws before you buy any!

The Red Light District in Amsterdam is also a famous attraction of the city. Whilst some might not consider a visit to this area as a particularly cultural experience, it is a chance to gain an insight into the relaxed and accepting attitude towards sexuality of all kinds in the Netherlands.

As well as the usual sex toy shops, strip clubs and X rated video shops, one thing you might not have seen elsewhere in Europe include live sex shows. If you’re over 18 and curious about seeing a show, or even participating in an interactive sex show, getting a ticket to an event like this is quite easy.

One might be surprised to learn that prostitution, like possession of marijuana is also legalised in Holland. And while prostitutes are visible in just about every European city, not all of them have prostitutes on display behind glass for those that like to, quite literally, window shop for a good time! This particular part of Amsterdam is thriving between the hours of 11pm until 2 or 3am.

But Amsterdam is not all just about sex, drugs and rock and roll. There are other ways for tourists, especially for families to enjoy some good, clean fun in Amsterdam.

Ever stayed on a houseboat? Amsterdam is a great city to enjoy this unique type of holiday accommodation. Thanks to Amsterdam’s vast network of canals, houseboats are a great way to enjoy a unique experience and some peace and quiet, yet be just a short walk away from many of the city’s main attractions.

If renting a houseboat in Amsterdam sounds appealing to you, hit the internet and do your research. Many websites offer a range of holiday accommodation in Amsterdam. Perhaps you’d like to rent an Amsterdam apartment instead? Maybe a room in a hostel in Amsterdam’s city centre? These types of accommodation and many others are easily accessible through the internet.

The more you research, the more chances you have of finding some great accommodation in Amsterdam that satisfies your needs and works in with your budget. Remember that the earlier you book, the more likely you are to have not just a good choice of options, but good options that are great value for money as well.

The average price for mid level accommodation in Amsterdam is about 100 euros a night for two people. For this price you can expect to rent something centrally located, with one or two bedrooms, possibly with heating and air-conditioning and an internet connection. Everything you need to enjoy a business trip or family holiday!

Apartments in Amsterdam usually come fully equipped with a kitchen and bathroom, and most usually supply bed sheets and towels, but check the conditions of your choice carefully to ensure these things are included.

Things To Do In Las Vegas With Kids — The Top 3

Posted by Dotcommarketing in Recreation and Leisure

The best things to do in Las Vegas usually involve wedding chapels and casinos. However, Las Vegas is fast becoming a great place for a family vacation. There are plenty of thing to do in Las Vegas to keep the kids entertained. You can’t go passed indoor skydiving, Madame Tussauds, and The Stratosphere Tower. In Vegas, a good time is a sure bet!

#1 Indoor Skydiving

The first of the things to do in Las Vegas with the kids is something that parents, and even Grandparents will want to do too. The Las Vegas Indoor Skydiving Center will put you back on the ‘cool list’ with the kids. Located in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, the center is simulates the skydiving experience with a wind machine. The machine produces enough force to simulate a real freefall skydiving experience. Most ‘flyers’ can do flips and tricks with the protection of a trampoline below and padded walls. The center can video the flight on request or it will capture the moment in still. Full training and safety gear is provided by the center. Kids of most ages will be able to fly, but there is a weight restriction of those lighter than 40 pounds.

#2 Madame Tussauds

The next on the list of kid-friendly things to do in Las Vegas involves a bit of celebrity spotting. Madame Tussauds Interactive Museum originated in London around 200 years ago. It has turned the art of wax modeling into one of the most popular tourist attractions across the world. The Las Vegas Madame Tussauds museum has fully interactive exhibits — guests are actually encouraged to touch and feel.

Madame Tussauds will keep the kids entertained for hours. They are able to practice their golf skills with one of the greatest golfers of our time — Tiger Woods. The Tiger Woods exhibit has an artificial green, different height putters, and (a slightly stiffer) Tiger to give the kids tips as they putt.

Continuing along the sports theme there’s a basketball court with the great Shaquille O’Neal. Kids are challenged with successfully shooting hoops with Shaq playing his best defence.

#3 The Stratosphere Tower

The last kid-friendly things to do in Las Vegas will get your blood pumping. The Stratosphere Tower looks normal enough, but what’s sitting at the top of the observation deck makes this one of the most thrilling Las Vegas attractions around. Aside from taking one of the Las Vegas Helicopter tours, the Stratosphere is the easiest way to see the sights of Las Vegas from the air. The Stratosphere Tower is the highest observation tower in the country at over 1100 feet. The observation deck is home to a newly re-vamped set of thrill rides. Sitting at 900 feet above ground level all three of the Stratosphere rides, the Big Shot, X-Scream, and Insanity — The Ride, involve some element of being dangled over the edge with nothing but clear space between you and the ground.

The scariest of them all, the X-Scream, involves a high tech teeter-totter. The teeter totter lifts its carriage high up into the air before angling downward and speeding the carriage at 30 miles per hour toward the end. Just before you think you’re going to sail straight off the end and plummet 900 feet to the ground it stops on the edge. To keep you guessing the X-Scream does this three times at varying angles to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Modern Version Of Ancient Board Games

Posted by Vgevge in Games

A number of games from long ago all still have a great basis for entertainment in today’s culture. Simple designs allow for the game to be easily adaptable for modern players yet the crafting of the game lets it have a timeless entertainment. Many of these games simply use basic pieces and a simply designed board, but with the nature of the game and the competition of the fellow player, anyone can have a thrilling time. A number of games from many thousands of years ago can still be discovered today, available in modern editions with slightly redesigned formats.

One extremely popular classic game is the one of Chinese origin called Go. Using simple black and white tiles on a grid-faced board, players try to convert their opponent’s pieces into their own color. This game has found life today as the game Othello. This game makes players think heavily into the strategy one needs to fully manipulate the board into the best possible position, however, for certain spaces are also a great advantage to the player who claims them.

Playing a piece on an edge space lowers the chances of the piece being changed for it offers less opportunities for an opponent to surround it. Othello offers players many options into different strategies and challenges them to think in a different way than other board games allow. It can be a great mental exercise and it is a very satisfying resolution to successfully win one of these games. All that Othello takes is a little careful planning and calculation, a good opponent, and the desire for a stimulating mental challenge for a good time to be had by all.

Another game that has lasted through the ages is Parcheesi, with origins tracing back to India from as far back as 500 BC. Officially considered to be the national game of India, Pachisi found its way into the world and officially joined American culture in 1874, when a game manufacturer registered the trademark of the game which is now known as Parcheesi. The game became highly popular in America, as it is the entire world, and it is no wonder why. With easy to learn rules and a number of employable strategies, Parcheesi is a game that will never be the same twice.

Each player starts the game by choosing a color and placing their four colored tokens in the designated home space on the board. The intended object of the game is to move all of the pawns from the home space along the path of the board into the central ending space. The game is not as easy as simply rolling high numbers on the dice and moving along the path, however. Other players can capture pawns and send them back to the beginning “nest” space, forcing the player to begin the journey again for that pawn. The player who captures a pawn is also rewarded for their effort, for any time that one player sends another player’s pawn back to the nest, that player is rewarded with 20 additional movement points to be used at the end of a turn. This game allows players to become highly competitive, racing against each other for victory, and this provides even modern players with the chance for great enjoyment.

Understanding The Three Stages Of Chess

Posted by Vgevge in Games

It is commonly said that a Chess game contains three separate states which all give way to the game as a whole. The Opening Stage is where the board starts to be set by the players in order to launch their impending attacks. This is when the positions are fortified and players ready themselves for the oncoming game. The Middle Game is when the real battle begins to take place. Pieces are attacked and defended with great propensity here and many of the Chess pieces will be removed from the board. The Endgame is the final portion of the game, where players will use their remaining pieces to try and secure a win over the other. Each phase has its own important points that need to be considered by all players in order to play a strong Chess game.

The central four squares are considered to be the four strongest positions that one can hold in a Chess game. Having utter control over this area puts one in charge of the center of the board and gives players the largest area of reach. Attacks being made from the sides of the board are more easily deflected and having to rout oneself around the central area can be a hindrance.

Whichever player can control the center area of the game will be the one who can make the most direct attacks and has the most power in defending their own side. Fighting for control of this area early in the game is usually one of the first tactics of a strong opening. Another key portion is securing the King’s position, normally by Castling. When a player will Castle a King and a Rook, not only does the Rook move closer to the center portion of the board, but the King will be buried deeper into a protected territory.

The Middle Game is all out war. The goal for any one player is generally to capture more pieces of the opponent than the opponent can capture of theirs, although the ultimate goal is to get into the best position for the Endgame. Generally, one wants to be able to capture pieces, if not for free, but by sacrificing only lower pieces than the captured piece is worth. This isn’t always possible, however, and sometimes an even trade results, with a Knight for a Knight or a Bishop for a Bishop. The most important thing to keep in mind during a Middle Game, however, is to always be aware of the entire board. There are a lot of elements happening and by doing one’s best to be aware of all of them, a Chess player can do a better job in protecting their key pieces.

The Endgame is solely about trying to force a Checkmate against another player. This is made possible by a player centralizing all of their remaining pieces, putting them within striking positions against their opponent. Another key strategy is working toward the promotion of Pawns, for when these Pawns can reach the other end of the board, they can be made into Queens and with these Queens, a Checkmate is easily possible. Knowing a smart endgame will only help in winning a game of Chess, but it is also key to fully understand every stage of the game. Only then can one grow into a truly great Chess player.
